A China truck manufacturer has achieved what Tesla has not achieved with the Cybertruck.

At the Hanover commercial vehicle exhibition, in a hidden corner of a huge exhibition hall, I stumbled upon those three trucks. At first, I thought they were movie sets. They are so surreal and futuristic. But I was wrong. Kaiyun Energy is a completely real Hong Kong company that focuses on green energy and also incidentally manufactures trucks. Those small, medium, and large trucks made of stainless steel are not models nor individually modified show cars. Instead, they have already passed the prototype stage and are allegedly truly existing and purchasable products.

As I walked hunched over among the grey pictures, I slowly moved among the machines that were much more vivid and impressively shaped than the pictures. Gradually, the two guards of the booth, a Chinese man and a Chinese girl, came up to me. I told them how much I liked these things, and they responded to my compliment kindly. Later, I found out that the Chinese girl is the translator for the man who speaks English better than her. And this man is the genius who designed these shapes. They told me that these vehicles are actually just waiting for customers, and they can be manufactured with diesel engines, battery-powered electric systems and hydrogen power.

Kaiyun is excellent in design, but unimaginative in naming. The small machine is called “One Meter” because it is one meter wide. The medium-sized one is called “Ten Cubic”, which is very reasonable because its cargo space is twelve cubic meters. If the largest machine did not have a conference room facility and was brought to Hanover in its original towed design, it would be called “Tractor”.

(Kaiyun Tractor: As a three – axle tractor, it can be made with 490 – horsepower electric, 462 – horsepower diesel or 707 – horsepower hydrogen power, and its price is €95,000, €105,000 or €132,000.)

(Kaiyun Ten Cubic: The price of the battery – powered version is €33,000, that of the diesel version is €36,000, and that of the hydrogen – technology version is €39,000.)

(Kaiyun One Meter: Powered by electricity, it costs 4,000 euros, equipped with a 16 – kWh battery and has a maximum speed of 70 km/h.)

The doors of the vehicles could be opened, and it was also free to sit in the driver’s seat. Looking at the cars more closely, they were very simple and in some places quite primitive, but I saw practical, durable, and robust technology (at least in terms of the structure. I couldn’t disassemble the engine compartment of any of the cars), but surely in the eyes of many professional buyers, this rather increases than decreases the value of the concept.

The stunning overall effect is composed of extremely simple details.

Paint the primitive piping system red enough and it will be the coolest truck cab we can imagine. Even the speckled artificial leather carpet won’t spoil the effect. Moreover, this shoddy stuff makes the whole thing more desirable in some perverse way.

The interior of the smaller truck is raised by a red – painted reinforcement.

The shift – knob is the kind that was seen in Japanese cars twenty years ago (the appearance is very familiar.

The concept behind the unpainted steel plates can achieve the reduction of environmental pressure (load).

The eye – catching but actually very simple design that enables the manufacturing technology and the purist implementation are convincing: I believe that these commercial vehicles are indeed real products. According to the brochures obtained at the booth, Kaiyun can make its vehicles suitable for a variety of special tasks: from the open – topped sightseeing minibus, through the dump truck, all the way to the food truck, they can make anything. I wish them success in Europe, because I would be very happy to see this technically – edged, cool – looking form in its unadorned simplicity appear more frequently in the local cities and on the roads!

Unique! The cubic design of these Chinese trucks will surprise you.

The IAA Transportation 2024 exhibition held in Hanover from September 17 to 22 is an important commercial vehicle event. A large number of new products will be exhibited, including some unusual ones. Now let’s take a look at the surprising vehicles displayed by Kaiyun Energy, a Chinese manufacturer that has set its sights on Europe.

(Par Gatien-Hugo RiposseauPublié le 21/09/2024 – 08:00 Mis à jour le 23/09/2024 – 10:04. The Chinese manufacturer Kaiyun Energy has launched a series of multi-functional vehicles, whose styling can be described as disturbing at least.)

The Old Continent is coveted not only by Chinese automobile brands. Commercial vehicle manufacturers from the Middle Kingdom are also making their presence felt here. While Maxus and BYD are already present, some of their competitors will follow suit. This is the case for the manufacturer Kaiyun Energy, which has presented vehicles with astonishing looks. What’s their common point? An immoderate taste for cubic volumes, giving the impression that they come straight out of a science fiction movie. Spotlight on the three models that are unlike any others and are on display at the IAA Transportation 2024 show in Hanover.

Ten Cubic: Harvester or Swiss Army knife?

One of the most atypical is probably the Ten Cubic, a 2-ton van with a loading volume of 12 cubic meters. Its harvester-like front impresses. Its square and almost completely flat windshield is simply gigantic. And what about its perfectly smooth sides or its shoebox-like silhouette?

(Under its harvester-like appearance, the Ten Cubic is capable of transporting 4 tons of payload. It is available in battery electric, diesel and gasoline versions.)

This geometric utility vehicle that is 5.99 meters long, 2.40 meters wide and 2 meters high has more than one string to its bow. Capable of transporting 4 tons and adopting several configurations, it can be used for refrigerated transportation, delivery, moving and even cleaning services. Another particularity: it comes in three versions, with prices starting between €33,000 and €39,000. The electric version has a WLTP range of 240 kilometers with its 48 kWh battery. The more expensive diesel (€36,000) and hydrogen (€39,000) variants offer a more comfortable range of 1,000 kilometers.

One meter: A passkey but not unnoticed.

The smallest model presented by the manufacturer based in Hong Kong is the One meter. It is a mini-vans only 1 meter wide. With a length of 3.70 meters and a height of 1.76 meters, it has the advantage of being able to slip through almost anywhere while offering a payload of 500 kg, equal to its unladen weight. An asset that destines it for last-mile delivery or street cleaning. But not only that, as there are also possibilities for conversion into a food truck or a mini-mobile workshop for street artists. Its silhouette shows two distinct volumes.

(The One meter lives up to its name with its width of exactly 1 meter. Intended for last-mile delivery, it can also be converted into a mini-food truck or a mobile workshop for street artists. Its prices start at €4,000.)

The larger part is dedicated both to loading a volume of 1.68 cubic meters and to the driver’s seat, accessible through a door comparable to that of an electric wine cellar. The second part, located just in front of the driver’s seat, is reserved for its powertrains. Because, like the Ten Cubic, the One meter has three versions that use as many different energies. All offer a range of 200 kilometers. The electric version, priced at €4,000, has a tiny 16 kWh battery. A little more expensive (€4,700), the diesel variant with the appetite of a sparrow (2.8 liters/100 km) is content with a 5.5-liter tank. Priced at €5,200, the hydrogen One meter consumes only 0.5 kg of this ecological fuel to cover 100 kilometers.

Tractor: A futuristic semi-trailer.

The most imposing model in the Chinese manufacturer’s range is the Tractor. A not really original name for this road tractor whose design appears inspired by that of the Tesla Cybertruck. Here again the lines are sharply cut and there are many angles. The windshield is oversized. Its payload of 40 tons destines it to tow the heaviest loads on the road, where it should turn heads with its futuristic look. This is especially true in the configuration presented at the IAA Transportation show, where it was hitched to a custom-made trailer for it. The vehicle will be offered in battery electric versions with a range of 300 kilometers, diesel (870 kilometers) and hydrogen (800 kilometers), at base prices ranging from €95,000 to €132,000.

(The Tractor is a futuristic-looking road tractor measuring 7.30 meters long, 2.55 meters wide and 3.45 meters high. Like the other two models on display, it can adopt a battery electric, diesel or hydrogen powertrain.)

Monstrous electric trucks, chic minibuses, futuristic garden helpers

Monstrous electric trucks, chic minibuses, futuristic garden helpers: in Hanover, the commercial vehicle industry is showcasing vehicles for the transportation of tomorrow. Here are twelve special examples.

A bus whizzes past, two delivery trucks whir in the opposite direction. There is a lot of traffic on the “Expo-Allee” on the exhibition grounds in Hanover – but hardly any noise. Around the halls of the IAA Transportation, the new, quiet world of transportation is already a reality with many electric models.

And there are many more vehicles on display in the halls that are intended to make the future of freight transport on the road cleaner and more economical. Karin Rådström, designated CEO of the Daimler Truck Group, reported astonishing results at the presentation of the new Mercedes eActros 600 electric truck: on a long-distance journey across Europe with a full load, the electric tractor unit consumed 109 kWh per 100 kilometers. This corresponds to the energy value of a good 11 liters of diesel. On average, a diesel truck consumes more than twice as much per 100 kilometers.

Efficiency is the word of the hour in the commercial vehicle industry – this is evident at almost every stand at this IAA Transportation. Buses, trucks, vans and refuse collection vehicles simply have to pay for themselves.

The second trend is that many companies are no longer just adorning themselves with flowery sustainability promises, but are presenting products ready for series production that fulfill them. These range from electric four-ton trucks to design details aimed at reducing emissions of all kinds. One example of this is a new high-performance fan for electric trucks from Stuttgart-based supplier Mahle. Its fan blades are modeled on the shape of an owl’s wings. This reduces the fan’s noise emissions by more than half. Another contribution to the new, quiet world of transportation.

Launch of the “Shenmu Model”: A Breakthrough in the Hydrogen Energy Industry

KaiYun Energy Partners with its First Commercial Vehicle Partner

Shenmu City, with its significant demand for short-haul coal transportation and abundant by-product hydrogen from coal chemical industries, is part of Yulin, one of the first cities designated as a demo city for carbon peak demonstration. It has the prerequisites for developing a closed-loop vale chain in the hydrogen energy industry.

The “Shenmu Model” is tasked with the historic mission to transform Shenmu City via hydrogen energy. The core objectives of driving economic development through ” hydrogen absorption” and “localization of hydrogen energy equipment manufacturing” shall support the high-quality development of the Yellow River’s “Nine Bends” area.

As the organizer and implementer of the ” Shenmu Model” for Shenmu City’s energy transition and transformation, KaiYun Energy signed a comprehensive hydrogen absorption and hydrogen industry cooperation agreement with the Shenmu City Government on July 26, 2024. As a technology-intensive enterprise, KaiYun has completely eliminated the industry’s
dependence on government subsidies through solid and advanced product capabilities and business model. In the initial phase,8,000 hydrogen-powered heavy trucks will be systematically rolled out, and the operations of these vehicles will drive the full-capacity operation of corresponding hydrogen production and refueling facilities, resulting in an annual hydrogen absorption capacity of 130,000 tons and in the phase by phase establishment of a full hydrogen energy industry chain and equipment manufacturing in Shenmu. KaiYun will assist the Shenmu City Government in realizing the “hydrogen energy industrialization through coal industry hydrogenation” concept to create a globally influential “Shenmu Model.”

On August 23,2024, Mr. Chao WANG, Chairman of KaiYun Energy, and Mr.Liu Zhijun, Party Secretary and Chairman of Xiamen Jin Long, met and discussed the vast potential of hydrogen energy commercial vehicles in Shenmu City and the in – depth cooperation opportunities. The cooperation is settled via the KaiYun’s order to purchase 1,000 hydrogen
short-distance heavy duty trucks and 8,000 hydrogen energy micro logistics vehicles.

This batch built-up vehicle procurement is one of the key links in launching the high-intensity deployment and operation of the “Shenmu Model”. Xiamen Jin Long will continue to invest in core technology, focus on the layout of the commercial vehicle industry, and have the core capabilities of large-scale commercial vehicle delivery, so as to effectively ensure that the first batch of orders for the “Shenmu Model” can be delivered on schedule with high quality.

The launch of the first batch vehicle delivery will sufficiently promote the realization of “Shenmu Manufacturing” for hydrogen fuel cell systems and core hydrogenation equipment.

KaiYun Energy will continue to provide more purchase orders for hydrogen energy core components, complete vehicles and basic equipment and facilities, attracting more excellent hydrogen energy industry chain participants to settle in Shenmu City, so as to not only effectively reduce industry costs, but also to facilitate the real commercial applications of vehicle operations. The establishment of the “positive-sum game” industry chain relationship is instrumental in developing the hydrogen fuel cell powered commercial fleets as the key force for large-scale hydrogen consumption.

The signing of this batch procurement is an important practice for KaiYun Energy to take the realization of the “Shenmu Model” as its own mission and to actively implement the national “dual carbon” strategy. KaiYun Energy, under its strategy to “decisively launch large scale vehicles adopting to the unique requirements in Western China and to organize the hydrogen chain to win the battle”, will organize the localization of upstream and downstream enterprises in the industrial chain, create the ” of hydrogen consumption and hydrogen energy equipment manufacturing, serve the national energy security strategy, and become one of the important energy operating companies in the country’s new energy economy.

On June 12th, the first batch of 5 hydrogen – powered special delivery vehicles were successfully dispatched in Tianshan District, marking the official launch of the first hydrogen energy consumption demonstration project in Tianshan District. Subsequently, 700 “hydrogen – powered special delivery vehicles” will cover various express delivery stations in Tianshan District. It is expected that within the next year, a total of 10,000 “hydrogen – powered special delivery vehicles” will be shuttling through the streets and alleys of Urumqi.

The vehicles have a dark green body, a driver’s cabin that can accommodate one person, a simple operating console, no exhaust pipe at the bottom, and very little driving noise… At the vehicle dispatch event site, the reporter saw that 5 brand – new hydrogen – powered special delivery vehicles were ready to go. The size of these vehicles is the same as that of electric tricycles.

Approaching the hydrogen – powered special delivery vehicles parked at the site, Liu Yifan, a distribution specialist from ZTO Express, took the lead in experiencing by sitting in the driver’s cabin.

“The functions are complete, the stability coefficient is high, and the power is also good,” said Liu Yifan. Although the vehicle body is small, it has a large internal storage space, which is comfortable and can protect from the wind and rain.

The on – site staff introduced that the hydrogen – powered special delivery vehicle complies with the national N1 commercial vehicle standard, with a speed of 70 kilometers per hour. During the driving process, the vehicle relies on burning hydrogen energy to charge itself, achieving the purpose of large – scale hydrogen consumption. There is a hydrogen gas tank at the bottom of each vehicle, which can carry 200 grams of hydrogen and has a cruising range of about 60 kilometers, meeting the delivery routes of express delivery personnel for 1 – 2 days. Each hydrogen replacement only takes 2 – 3 minutes to complete.

This vehicle also has auxiliary functions such as an electronic fence, speed limit for different road sections, and remote monitoring of the driving trajectory, effectively improving the efficiency of road safety supervision.

Urumqi is one of the first 4 hydrogen energy industry demonstration zones in Xinjiang. Areas such as Midong District, Dabancheng District, and Urumqi County are rich in wind and solar resources, which is conducive to the construction of green electricity – to – hydrogen production projects.

“We have currently accurately deployed hydrogenation facilities in places where couriers often go in and out. We plan to set up more than 130 hydrogenation points within 2 years to supply various hydrogen energy vehicles,” said Wang Chao, the CEO of Beijing Kaiyun Energy Co., Ltd.

Beijing Kaiyun Energy Co., Ltd. was established in 2014, committed to providing and operating hydrogen energy consumption solutions, promoting the hydrogenation of the transportation industry, and realizing the industrialization of hydrogen energy. Solving the main contradictions in hydrogen use to promote the coordinated development of all links such as hydrogen production – storage – transportation – hydrogenation, infrastructure construction, and core component manufacturing in the hydrogen energy industry. At present, the company has established a regionalized company – Kaijiangyun Company according to the development needs of the Xinjiang business with Urumqi as the core.

Hydrogen energy is an important part of the emerging energy system and an important starting point for promoting the new energy security strategy. In March this year, the Development and Reform Commission of the Autonomous Region, jointly with the Emergency Management Department and the Industry and Information Technology Department of the Autonomous Region, issued the “Notice on Accelerating the Development of the Hydrogen Energy Industry”, which has brought great benefits to the development of the hydrogen energy industry in Urumqi, will accelerate the opening up of the hydrogen energy industry chain, and help create a zero – carbon closed – loop of “wind – solar green electricity + hydrogen production + hydrogen storage + hydrogenation + hydrogen energy application”.

“Actively promote the development of the hydrogen energy industry and encourage and support the application and promotion of hydrogen energy products,” said Wang Zhenyu, a staff member of the Investment Promotion Service Center of Tianshan District. The large – scale operation of hydrogen energy vehicles will provide a new low – carbon and green solution for the transportation field in Urumqi. They will continue to expand the hydrogen energy consumption application scenarios in Tianshan District, provide enterprises with full – life – cycle services, and provide a better development environment for the hydrogen energy industry.
